Begun in 1974 by the late Valerie M. Orridge R.N. (1932-2015), with the purchase of one Shirley Verrett album, it has since grown to over 500 LP recordings featuring Black Opera Singers from the USA, Bermuda, Jamaica, Martinique, Barbados, Tobago, and Brazil.


Ms. Orridge was a Registered Nurse, Health Educator, Board Certified Sex Educator (A.A.S.E.C.T.) with a Masters Degree in Human Sexuality, and a staunch Tenant Organizer and Leader revered by City, and State Elected Officials. In addition, Ms. Orridge quickly developed a passion for collecting out-of-print, and rare LP recordings of the aforementioned subject, a passion she would pass along to her son. Ms. Orridge was also the first cousin of the renowned poet the late June Jordan, and both were raised as siblings within the same house, and for whose poetry Leonard Bernstein composed, and recorded a duet, which is included within this collection.


This Website was created to showcase the beauty, and artistry of the album covers, along with their photo inserts, where applicable, as were intended, as well as for education purposes. 


Although 500 LP's might be considered an impressive number for a private collection of the aforementioned subject, the collection is no where near complete. The Valerie M. Orridge LP Record Collection sincerely apologizes to those singers living, and deceased, whose names, and LP's should be part of this collection, but are not, as of yet. This Website shall be updated once yearly to unveil new additions to the collection as they become available.
